DB12 Goldfinger Edition – Bond is back

Two legendary names, synonymous with class and prestige. James Bond and Aston Martin.

From the moment Bond first gets his hands on the DB5 in the 1964 classic, “Goldfinger”, a timeless partnership was born. A car that has become as famous as the franchise that first featured it, arguably the most famous movie car of all time.

And now, the Aston Martin DB12, “The world’s first super tourer” as Aston has named it, pays tribute to the worlds most revered movie car. To celebrate the 60th anniversary of the spy classic, a limited run of 60 DB12s are to be commissioned, finished in the iconic Silver Birch to match the original DB5, with some beautiful touches like the 18ct gold-plated interior jewellery, seats to match Bond’s suit, and many more we’ll dive deeper into here.

As Aston say, “Prepare to be stirred, not shaken.”

Aston have always had such great opportunities for cool collaborations like this, in recent times the DB9, DBS and Vantage have all had the ‘Bond Edition’ treatment, the latter DBS and Vantage didn’t really dive into the details too much, although the Vantage’s “The Living Daylights” homage got a set of skis suction cupped to the back window, which is wild!

Let’s dive into the details of the Goldfinger Edition

Exterior

The first thing Bond fans will notice is the Silver Birch paintwork, an exact match to the original DB5’s colour from 60 years ago. This is paired with multi-spoke, silver plated wheels, meant to evoke the spirit of the original’s wire spokes (they do look a lot like one of the standard DB12 wheel options with a silver paint job, but we’ll let this one slide).

Aston Martin have given the side strakes the golden touch – the first of many you’ll notice throughout the car (which is on theme, of course). Other than the custom script on the back and two Q badges on the side panels though, that’s pretty much it for the exterior, subtle and simple, but those that know will love it we’re sure!

Interior

This is where you really start to spot the extravagant touches that make this special edition ‘special’, starting with (of course) the gold, specifically the 18ct gold-plated interior jewellery across the dashboard and centre console, but of course it doesn’t stop there, with gold fibres being woven into the carbon fibre trim for that extra flare.

Of course the best place to take in all this gold is the front seats which have also had a little makeover, with the ‘Prince of Wales Check’ perforation in the seats, made to match Bond’s three-piece suit, aka ‘The Goldfinger Suit’, a subtle touch that’s also replicated on sill plates as you step in, with it’s unique sill plaque stamped into the centre.

Additionally, you’ll spot some ‘eight of hearts’ detail embroidery in the sun-visor, more callbacks to the iconic movie, and of course you get a bottle of 007 Bollinger!

The important part

So we’re walked you through the car, now comes the most important part for any discerning Bond fan looking to get their hands on one of the 60 that will be produced, the price. The ‘base’ model DB12 starts out at around £180,000, with the spec you actually want probably upwards of £220,000. So what would a 1 of 60, special edition car like this cost? Multiple sources are reporting a price tag of £300,000…

That is a decent hike up in price when you first look at it, but when you look at the options for a DB12, you can quite easily spec up to something close to that, and it will be no-where near as special as this. For those who want to feel like Bond, this feels like the ultimate tribute car, it’s not completely out of reach like Aston’s DB5 Goldfinger continuations were.

So should you buy one, if you can?

Aston Martin are probably in the best place they have been in a long time in terms of stability, their build quality has improved massively over the last few years thanks to the Stroll takeover, the company has gone back to building to demand, rather than stockpiling cars, so you know each car has had care and attention put into both their spec and build. If you’re lucky enough to be invited to order one of these (as with most luxury marques, this will probably be after you’ve bought a DBX and another model no doubt) and did spend your hard earned money on the Goldfinger edition, you know for a fact you are getting a piece of history that you can actually enjoy.

In short, if you aren’t a Bond fan, this is probably a miss, but if you are a fan, yes 100% you should buy one if you can, this is the special edition for you. As you’d expect, the attention to detail is exquisite, the callbacks to the film aren’t overbearing and brash like some previous AM special editions have been, and it’s built on what is one of Aston Martin’s best cars in recent years.
